Local Scholarship Program

Each year the American Mensa Education and Research Foundation offers more than $50,000 in scholarships.

Who Is Eligible:

Any student who intends to be enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution of post-secondary education for the fall term of 2012-2013 is eligible to enter the scholarship contest.

How Scholarships Are Awarded:

Awards will be made on the basis of an essay of fewer than 550 words that describes the applicant's career, vocational, or academic goal toward which the scholarship is to provide aid.

How to Apply:

Fill out the application form and send it in with the essay to your local Mensa group. Full application instructions can be found on the form.

Completed applications and essays must be postmarked no later than January 15.

How to Receive an Application Form:

There are several ways to get the application form. It can be downloaded from here. You’ll be asked for your zip code first so that you get the correct application for your address.

Minnesota residents and some Western Wisconsin residents (with zip codes starting with 540) can receive the application form through U.S. mail. Send a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope to the address below. Mailed requests for applications must be postmarked no later than December 31.

Or check with the guidance counselor at your high school. A copy of the form has been sent to some area high schools.

How to Maximize Your Chances of Winning a Scholarship:

The form has all of the instructions you need to enter the scholarship contest. Follow them carefully - entries are rejected for what may seem trivial reasons.

  • Do not put your name on the essay.
  • Make sure the essay is double-spaced.

Several specialized scholarships are listed on page 2 of the form. Check the ones that apply to your goals and situation. If they're not checked, you won't be considered for those special scholarships.
